Low-Carbon Lifestyle Volunteer Experience Day

In mid-July, the Sustainability Unit along with ICBC (Asia) Charitable Foundation enjoyed a family day event at the HKFYG Jockey Club Organic Farm, attracting about 50 youth and family participants from ONE ICBC Social Service Team.

Despite the temperature soaring above 30°C on the event day, the summer heat couldn’t dampen anyone’s enthusiasm! Participants followed our expert guide to experience a farmer’s daily routine, helped with weeding, taking part in ordinary farm tasks. They also learned about smart, low-carbon farming technology, which enables real-time monitoring of soil temperature and humidity to better protect crops and tackle the challenges brought by climate change. After the hard work, everyone enjoyed handmade dumplings stuffed with freshly harvested organic chives and locally-sourced pork. Our volunteers couldn’t stop praising the taste of organic produce — a perfect ending to the day!

With climate change affecting global agriculture through extreme weather, everyone is striving for sustainable development. The farm experience helps youths gain firsthand insight into climate change, inspiring them to adopt a low-carbon lifestyle and join in protecting our planet. We look forward to seeing more youths get involved, change daily habits, and join hands to create a more sustainable and livable future.

About the Youth Decarbonisation Platform

Since the 2023/24 academic year, the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups has been promoting the “Youth Decarbonisation Platform” in schools, achieving over 2,700,000 kg of carbon reduction to date. As the program enters its third year, we aim to encourage more youth involvement in carbon reduction initiatives. The “Campus Decarbonisation Ambassador” program has been launched to cultivate a group of environmentally conscious student leaders who will mobilize their peers to adopt low-carbon lifestyles. This initiative not only significantly reduces carbon emissions in schools but also enhances environmental awareness and responsibility among students and staff.
